Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Clare. I’m a Mum of three children and I work part-time from home as well as blogging at My Money Cottage .

What’s your side hustle?

I actually have LOTS of side hustles. My main one at the moment is blogging. I’ve actually made more money from blogging than I have from my actual salary for the last four months on the trot. I’m really hoping that continues as it’s going to make a HUGE difference to our lives.

I also have lots of other side hustles that help to bump up our monthly income – matched betting, surveys, mystery shopping. My Money Cottage is the place where I share all of the things I do to make more money.

What was your motivation for starting?

Both myself and my husband were made redundant from different jobs at the same time just before Christmas when I was pregnant with our daughter. It was an incredibly tough time and we really struggled to get through those few months when we were both out of work. It made me realise just how risky jobs can be these days. I wanted to make sure that we were never in that position again and so I looked into ways to make more money.

How much time do you put into it?

Until recently I’ve actually really struggled to find the time for the blog. But now, all three children are in full time education, and I have a few hours free every day after work to focus solely on blogging. It’s made a huge difference. I now put around 20 hours a week into blogging as I also do bits when the children are in bed. I always find though that I’m never on top of my “to do” list.

And what sort of money are you making?

I work 25 hours per week part-time and I’m making just slightly more from my blog than I am from my salary!

What’s the highlight been so far?

That first month when my blog income exceeded my salary. That was an incredible feeling.

How about the biggest challenge?

Finding the time. It’s getting easier but it’s still a struggle. With blogging, there’s ALWAYS something to do and you’re never on top of things. There are always emails to reply to, readers to respond to, posts to write, social media to update etc etc. It just never seems to end. I think you have to have a certain amount of love for blogging in order to make it work because it is so all-consuming!

What would you say to someone considering a similar route?

Do it! It’s not easy, ask questions, join relevant Facebook groups and don’t try to do it all when you’re just starting out. Also, try not to compare yourself to other bloggers.

What does the future hold for this venture?

Eventually, I’d love to blog full-time. At the moment though, I enjoy the relative security of my job whilst knowing that I have a great fallback plan if anything goes wrong!

And where can we find you?

You can find me at My Money Cottage , or on Facebook  or Twitter. I also run a UK deals group on Facebook where we share daily high street deals and bargains.

Are you feeling inspired yet?

As someone who is still relatively new to this blogging game, it is so inspirational to read Clare’s story.  Particularly to hear that she is making more from her blog than her job.  Thank you Clare for sharing your story!  And be sure to check out her site!

Love this! I am on a similar journey, and it is true, there is nothing more exciting than when you start making money from blogging for the first time. It brings such a feeling of accomplishment!

Inspiring read. I’m researching side hustles at the moment. I would have loved to hear some tips on how you made money off your blog. Thanks for sharing.
