Meal Planning: Back to work

September has started spectacularly!  The weather has been gorgeous and my morning runs have allowed me to witness the first signs of autumn with beautiful misty sunrises.  Unfortunately, September isn’t all amazing as I have to go back to work tomorrow.  But I am returning, for the first time, part time.  I’ve been calling it my semi-retirement much to my husband’s annoyance!  Take a look at my back to work meal planning.

A review of last week

This last week has been the perfect week for meal planning.  Everything worked out perfectly!  We ate what we planned when we’d planned to eat it.  There was no popping to shops for top ups.  Nor did we need to do any switching around due to short expiry dates.  Everything just fell into place!  If only every week was this easy.

Meal Planning: Hello September

The week ahead

So this week it is back to work for me and back to nursery for my daughter.  It isn’t quite normal though as I’m not working my normal days and most of the kids’ activities don’t start until next week.  We will be visiting my parents for the weekend which is something that we normally do once a month.  Usually, this means that we get a cheaper shopping week but my husband will be staying at home this time so I still have to make sure he gets fed.  Plus it seems to be the week where we have run out of everything.  Toilet roll, oils, baked beans etc.  Hence it is time to stock up again.

This week’s meals

Note:  There are less meals this week because we will be enjoying my mum and dad’s hospitality and I am not meal planning for my husband over the weekend.  I’ve left him with a pack of sausages and a box of cereal!  He will survive!

Breakfast

The husband has been shaking it up this last week and having overnight oats.  It looks great and is really cheap to make so I am happy with that.  The kids are happy with their usuals of Rice Krispies and Shreddies with my littlest sharing my yoghurt most mornings.

Lunch

LO Pesto Pasta

Bagels

Cheese sandwiches

LO Pasta Bake

Tuna pasta

Dinner

Chilli & Jacket Potatoes

Bacon, egg & chips

Cheese & tomato pasta bake

Sausage & mash

Lasagne

This week’s spend

Again I did a half and half shop this week.  I put all the items on my Tesco order first then went to Aldi today and bought those things that were cheaper.  I have been finding that the price per unit/quantity is actually fairly comparable between the two shops.  It does however seem to be that Aldi package things in smaller quantities.  This appears to make your food shop cheaper but in reality you are getting less food.  Of course, there are some cases where one is cheaper than the other and by doing things this way I’m getting the best price.

Plans for next week

Next week, it’s my birthday!  Definitely going to sneak some steak and chips on the shopping list I think!  And probably the ingredients for a unicorn birthday cake.  It might be an expensive one folks.

Do you change your meals depending on whether you have work that day?  Do you go for easy or fancy foods if you’ve had a hard day?

Well if it comes to me, I am going for fancy healthy food whenevr I have day off! I find it little hard to prepare and organize myself enough to eat healthy when I am working or away

I definitely eat much healthier when I am at work because I need to be super organised. When I am at home I tend to get “creative” and this is when the bad choices creep in.

I stay home so I eat whatever, whenever but make evening meals. When I used to work I planned more since the days were structured. Your meal plan looks good, it has variety and I like that 🙂

Charlotte Jessop

It’s a bit pasta heavy this week but it is easy and the kids eat it!

I always plan our meals each week. Your ideas will help me plan some of mine!

Glad I could help!

Sounds lovey and i need to start planning our lunches more. have not have chilli and jackets for ages, thanks for the idea

It’s a favourite in this house!

I love cooking and preparing on days that I don’t need to work so when it comes to meal time it is easy to organise. We love salads and do tend to avoid meat and fish during the week so meals are quite easy to prepare.

That’s a really good idea. I try to make as many lunches meat and fish free as possible and then at least one dinner.

Pasta is one of my favorite dishes to make whenever I want to eat on something for a few days; I make it for dinner, take it for lunch the next day, and maybe skip one day and eat it again for lunch.

Great suggestions! x

Yeah we love pasta! As you can see we eat it a lot. It’s easy to make in bulk and spread out over a few days.

Seriously so reasonable for a week’s worth of food! And I love sausage and mash, and pesto pasta!

Charlotte Jessop

I’m determined to get it cheaper too! It’s like a fun game for me.

Great ways to save little moola, I know we have notice a change in our grocery bill with our lifestyle change as well, but it is more about the proper portion control so we are able to stretch our food longer.

That makes such a difference too! I know that when we plan a meal to last two days it is much more likely to happen than if we just want it to.

Sounds like you are doing fantastically with the meal planning! Really enjoying reading your posts with costings each week! Thanks for linking up x

Thanks Katy! I’m really enjoying writing these posts. Thanks for the linky!

I don’t know what I would do without meal planning. I could improve on trying to save money on groceries though.

Meal planning is the best isn’t it?
